Thoughts on the government about one of the policy and my views about it.Wireless @ SG ProgrammeI have chosen this recent policy by the government, wireless @ SG Programme. This policy portrays one of the principles of good governance, being forward looking.
As the world and society move towards the high technological stage, more and more services require internet connection. To keep up with the pace, the Singapore government has improvised the Wireless @ SG Programme. This is part of the Intelligent Nation 2015 (iN2015) infocomm masterplan. The aim of the policy is to allow any user to be able to enjoy free, indoor and outdoor, seamless wireless internet connection with speed of beyond 1 Gbps at any area in Singapore by the end of 10 years. This policy will be implemented step by step. The first step taken was to allow several hotspots at public areas to have wireless internect connection of up to 512 kbps.
The targeted and beneficial users of this policy is the "people on the move". These people include business travellers and enterprise users, students, and tourists. They are now able to use their labtops and PDAs to retrive information on the net and gain acess to internet based services.
My views regarding this policyPersonally, i feel that this policy is a very important step made by the government to help boost Singapore's economy. Aiming to have wireless broadband internect connection at any area in Singapore is very important to enterprise users. And also, tourists will be attracted to Singapore, thus also raising tourism.
With wireless broadband internet connection available in Singapore, enterprise users are able to gain access to their severs and also able to connect to other enterprises at different parts of the globe, even when not in their offices and homes. These users now have a lesser restriction in the process of gaining economic interests. They can have a wider working area to run their errands.
The next benefitting group of people is the students. With more places with wireless internet connection, students are not restricted to homes and libraries with many are together in a group for a project. Few students or to say the student's parents like to have their child or children's friends always coming over to their house to do projects. Thus, homes are not ideal places for project work. When a group of students are to do project work with discussion in libraries, it is very inappropriate. The noise level will always be too high. But with more areas in Singapore to be covered with wireless internet connection, students will have a wider range of areas to choose where would be the most suitable area for them to hold their discussions, having internet connection at the same time.
As for tourists, they usually come from a more developed country than Singapore. Tourist will usually choose a country that is as high technological as their hometown to go enjoy themselves. Therefore, having wireless internet connection is a point that will attract tourists. Especially those tourists who wants to come to Singapore to tour on their own, or on a budget tour. They will want the fastest and easiest way to gain acess to the information and services they want. And that will be absolutely possible with internet. Nowadays tourists can book their hotel rooms and budget airline tickets online.
As the newest syllabus of primary school education will emphasize more on information technology, there will be an increasing demand in the future for internect connection countrywide. As more and more people move into the tertiary industy, more and more pepople will need internet access for alot of different uses.This policy is to aid Singapore to move towards a higher development stage. So in order to meet the needs in the future, the government is making plans for the future.
